Mann was born in Boston in 1844, the eldest son of the well-known educator, Horace Mann. He received much of his education informally from his father and also studied zoology and botany with Asa Gray and Louis Agassiz at the Lawrence Scientific School. Mann specialized in Hawaiian plants, and prepared his thesis on this subject.
